New Year's
Resolution: Quit the Gym |

We spent our holidays in
Las Vegas, where we were
reminded how it feels
when a business sets out
to surprise and delight
its customers. One
compelling experience
was using the gym at The
Wynn. Instead of
the usual ragtag
collection of treadmills
and well-used machines
in an extra hotel room,
this vast suite of
spaces was over-the-top
in amenities and
service. Our local
gym, founded by a
hands-on entrepreneur
and
recently sold to an
"investor," pales in
comparison. For
the past year, we've
done nothing but
complain about how the
new owner has chipped
away at the place.
But he has
developed a new, shared
culture: a membership
that will quit en
masse when the new
mega-gym under
construction nearby
finally opens.
I've had it with
"putting up with" sorry,
slow, surly, sloppy,
service, from the
contractor who doesn't
return phone calls,
through the perennially
late physician who
doesn't value my time as
much as her own, to the
script-reading
technical support people
named "Bob" in
Bangalore. I've
quit the gym, found a
new contractor, am
interviewing physicians
and have changed my tech
support company. I
hope you'll join me this
year in rejecting bad
service wherever you
find it. We may
gain a few pounds, but
we'll loose a lot of
stress. And,
maybe, just maybe,
service might begin to
improve. |
